Species selection and plantation management in enrichment planting with native timber species in the Panama Canal watershed

چکیده
Large areas of the Panama Canal Watershed have been converted to monocultures teak ( Tectona grandis ), a non-native timber species that is generally not providing hoped-for economic and ecological benefits Forest Landscape Restoration. Enrichment planting offers potential strategy for revitalizing these underperforming plantations through addition high-value, native understory, but more information needed guide implementation management in this region other tropical areas. We assessed performance six promising Byrsonima crassifolia, Dalbergia retusa, Dipteryx oleifera, Hyeronima alchorneoides, Platymiscium pinnatum, Terminalia amazonia ) as an enrichment plantations, specifically considered how light availability, crowding pressure annual fertilization affected seedling performance, we measured survival growth first 30 months post-planting ∼3,000 seedlings; half received did not. found rate significantly affect among- or within-species, except positive relationship D. oleifera. Overall was high (83%), and, while varied widely, there strong effect light, on survival. In contrast, overall by factors. Across all negatively related positively availability fertilization. There were among-species differences; one oleifera crowding, only responded P. pinnatum , B. crassifolia T. ). Our findings suggest study which suffered unacceptably mortality, use plantations. Among-species differences response growing environment highlight need continued studies establish specific silvicultural guidelines context.

Hawaiian native forest conserves water relative to timber plantation: species and stand traits influence water use.
Tropical forests are becoming increasingly alien-dominated through the establishment of timber plantations and secondary forests. Despite widespread recognition that afforestation results in increased evapotranspiration and lower catchment yields, little is known of the impacts of timber plantations on water balance relative to native forest. Native forest trees have been claimed to use water c...
متن کاملEffect of plantation with native and exotic species on soil CO2 emissions
The aim of this study was to investigate soil respiration in the plantation stands of Acer velutinum, Quercus castaneifolia, Fraxinus excelsior and Pinus brutia and to compare them with the natural stands in Sari educational-research forest of Darabkola. In order to measure physical and chemical properties of soil in each stand, 10 points were selected systematic randomly and samples were taken...
متن کاملBundling ecosystem services in the Panama Canal watershed.
Land cover change in watersheds affects the supply of a number of ecosystem services, including water supply, the production of timber and nontimber forest products, the provision of habitat for forest species, and climate regulation through carbon sequestration. The Panama Canal watershed is currently being reforested to protect the dry-season flows needed for Canal operations. Whether refores...
متن کاملPhylogenetic ecology applied to enrichment planting of tropical native tree species
Enrichment planting within established plantations or secondary forests is a common strategy to enhance forest recovery, given that later successional forest species tend to have low dispersal and limited recruitment into these sites. It is difficult, however, to predict how species of seedlings will perform when planted under different overstory species. The field of phylogenetic ecology offer...
متن کاملPlants Role in Noise Reduction of Interior Walls (Comparison of Noise Absorption in Native Species and Non-Native Species)
Noise pollution is one of the most important features of architectural spaces having a great impact on the comfort of residents. Therefore, providing appropriate and sustainable solutions for noise pollution control is essential. Today, with the use of man-made synthetic materials, it has been tried to improve the sound performance of buildings. The purpose of this study is to show the characte...
